I apologize for the length of this episode, but trust me, it's well worth it! Steve Wagner from Justice For All and I have an indepth discussion on the following topics:

Steve's book, "Common Ground Without Compromise;"

The difficulties of dialoguing with people online;

Why we shouldn't use the terms "biogenesis" and "brainwaves" anymore;

Why it takes so much time and effort to communicate well with those that are different from us;

Steve's thoughts on the personhood versus incrementalism debate, how BOTH sides have sophisticated arguments, and how they should treat each other.

Related Links:

Steve referred to Hadley Arkes' book, "Natural Rights and the Right to Choose." Buy it on Amazon.com.

This is the website Josh referred to with the personhood video implying that the incrementalist's hands are covered in blood.

Note from Josh: Steve and I recorded this conversation last November. Towards the end of our discussion we talk about the personhood vs. incrementalism debate, and I made the comment that I've seen a lot of harsh criticisms like "you're not really pro-life if that's your strategy," and that they've mostly come from one side of the equation, the personhood side. That has been true from my personal experiences, but I just had a phone conversation with Walter Hoye who is part of a personhood campaign in California, and he told me that he's heard many equally harsh things said to him by incrementalists. I'm disturbed when these kind of comments are made by both sides, and now that I have evidence that they're coming from incrementalists too, I wanted to correct the record, and as always on our podcast, stay fair to both sides.

Did the Tim Tebow ad venture into the problems Josh had with the "Imagine the Potential" CatholicVote ads from his infamous debate with Jon last year?
"I disagree with Josh on the use of the word 'murder' in the abortion debate."

"If fertilization is a 12-24 hour process, does this mean that the morning after pill is technically OK, since it would happen before fertilization is complete?"

"I heard a faulty argument for animal experimentation on MythBusters, and it sounds like the same arguments for human cloning."

"What do you think about trigger statutes that would make abortion illegal in a state in the event that Roe vs. Wade were overturned?"

Sex-Selection Abortion Resources from Liz:

These first 4 facts are cited in Steve Wagner's wonderful book, "Common Ground Without Compromise."

A British medical journal, The Lancet, estimated in 2006 that 10 million girls, who should have been born in India in the previous twenty years, were missing. (Source: Prabhat Jha, et. Al., “Low male-to-female sex ratio of children born in India: national survey of 1.1 million households,” The Lancet, 2006; 367:211-218.)

That is a rate of 500,000 girls per year. The authors attribute these missing girls to abortions that followed sex determination tests. Sex determination techniques include chorionic villus sampling, ultrasound, and amniocentesis. The techniques are constantly being refined. The Province reported in 1990 that an ultrasound tech in the United States had developed a non-invasive procedure for determining the sex of the fetus as early as fourteen weeks. See Glen Schaefer, “Ultrasound Tests Determine Sex of Fetus,” The Province, 11/25/1990.

An accompanying Lancet article by Shirish Sheth affirmed these assessments and referenced additional evidence that sex-selection abortions are common in India and China. In both countries, boys are much preferred to girls for cultural and socio-economic reasons. (Source: Shirish S. Sheth, “Missing female births in India,” The Lancet 2006; 367:185-186.)

A 2003 Lancet article also called attention to this problem: Dinest C. Sharma, “Widespread concern over India’s missing girls,” The Lancet 2003; 362:1553

Liz cited this study about US sex selection (Full-Text PDF Available)

Liz cited this Boston Globe article

We'll be posting audio from some of his speeches and interviews over the next month, to help make up for less podcasts until January. In this radio interview, Josh discusses common ground, good versus faulty pro-life arguments, comparing Trinidad's situation with the United States as regards to abortion, and responding to the main arguments International Planned Parenthood is making for legalizing abortion in Trinidad.

After the show, the young radio engineer said he had never heard the pro-life view defended in the way I talked about it. He hadn't really cared about it before, but he did now. He said he just hadn't heard anyone take my approach of using common ground and stuff.

Josh has a new tactic he uses with pro-lifers acting like jerks on YouTube, and he tells all in this episode. We also cover some basic dialogue tools you can use when responding to moral relativism. We've never covered that on this podcast before, but this is something pro-lifers come across a lot when discussing abortion, and you need to be prepared!

Note from Josh: WARNING - We're dealing with some very unkind comments on YouTube here. I'm going to say this episode would be a bit much for very young listeners, after the Link of the Week break. I bleep out cuss words, but still, parental discretion advised for those mom's listening around young children.

For further study:

With Steve's permission, I relied heavily on his work on responding to relativists in this show, but we didn't cover all of Steve's work on the subject. However, Steve just posted a four-page analysis, "Creating Dialogue on Moral Relativism" that sums up his work on the issue, that includes some sample dialogues very worth reading.

For even more study on this issue, Greg Koukl and Francis Beckwith wrote a wonderful book, "Relativism: Feet Firmly Planted in Mid-Air."

It's part 9 of the continuing series responding to Kenna's pro-choice video: "Pro-Life Lies." The video lists 55 "pro-life lies" she's heard, and in this series, we're responding to them all! (And pro-lifers are often surprised by our stance on some of these...)

In this episode, we respond to the statements:

"Back alley abortions are a myth."

"Illegalizing abortion will prevent it."

"Women should have babies if the sex was consensual."

"Abortion means less gay people."

DELETED SCENE: "Liz is a jerk and Josh is a musical snob."

For further study...

Practical talking points for responding to back-alley arguments. (Many of these are based on the wonderful work of Scott Klusendorf.)

This argument is begging the question. Unless you begin with the assumption that the unborn child is not human, this argument is tantamount to saying, “Because some people are killed attempting to murder others, the state should make it safe and legal for them to do so.”

Racists once argued that equal treatment for blacks would result in terrible riots and cause untold suffering among law abiding citizens. But this in no way proved that discrimination could be morally justified. The same is true with abortion, as pro-abortion philosopher Mary Anne Warren readily admits: “The fact that restricting access to abortion has tragic side effects does not, in itself, show that restrictions are unjustified, since murder is wrong regardless of the consequences of prohibiting it.” (Source: “On the Moral and Legal Status of Abortion,” in The Problem of Abortion, Joel Feinberg, et al, Wadsworth, 1984, p.103)

The claim that thousands of women died annually from illegal abortions prior to Roe is completely false and cannot be supported by any reliable statistical data:

In 1972, the year prior to legalization, the CDC recorded 39 deaths from illegal abortion, not 5,000 to 10,000.

Dr. Christopher Tietze, a leading pro-abortion statistician for Planned Parenthood, the CDC, etc. calls the claim of 5,000-10,000 deaths a year prior to legalization unmitigated nonsense. Noting that 45,000 women of reproductive age die each year from all causes, Tietze states, “It is inconceivable that so large a number as 5,000-10,000 are from one source.”

Dr. Bernard Nathanson, co-founder of the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL): “How many deaths were we talking about when abortion was illegal? In NARAL, we generally emphasized the drama of the individual case, not the mass statistics, but when we spoke of the latter, it was always ‘5,000 to 10,000 deaths a year.’ I confess I knew the figure was totally false, and I suppose the others did too if they stopped to think of it. But in the morality of our revolution, it was a useful figure, widely accepted, so why go out of the way to correct it with honest statistics. The overriding concern was to get the laws eliminated, and anything within reason that had to be done was permissible.” (Source: Aborting America, Doubleday Pub. P. 193)

Prior to Roe, the number of abortion related deaths had been declining steadily:

Dr. Andre Hellegers (late Prof. of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Georgetown University) pointed out in testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee (April 25, 1974) that improved medical care and use of penicillin resulted in a drop from 1,231 deaths in 1942, to 133 deaths in 1968.

Daniel Callahan (pro-abortion researcher from the Hastings Center): “The plausibility of the very high estimates of illegal abortions each year does not appear very strong.” (Abortion: Law, Choice & Morality, Macmillan, 1970 p. 135)

Even abortion advocates admit that prior to Roe, abortions were not performed by doctors with rusty coat hangers!

In 1960, Mary Calderone, then medical director of Planned Parenthood, pointed out that Dr. Kinsey had rightly demonstrated that 84-87% of all illegal abortions were performed by licensed physicians in good standing with the law. Writing in the American Journal of Public Health (July 1960) Calderone stated: “…90% of all illegal abortions are done by physicians. Call them what you will, abortionists or anything else, they are still physicians, trained as such; and many are in good standing in their communities. Whatever trouble arises usually comes after self-induced abortions, which comprise approximately 8%, or with the very small percentage that go to some kind of non-medical abortionist. Another corollary fact: physicians of impeccable standing are referring their patients for these illegal abortions to colleagues they know are willing to perform them.”

What did you get in trouble for as a child?

What is your favorite movie, and why?

What has been the pro-life movement’s greatest victory (or victories) so far?

What has been the pro-life movement’s greatest failing or weakness?

Graphic Pictures: Should we use them, and if so, how, when, and where?

Stem Cell Research & Human Cloning: What should pro-lifers be doing about this, and why?

Assisted Suicide & Euthanasia: What should pro-lifers be doing about this, and why?

How should pro-lifers interact with those who are pro-abortion-choice?

What single thing should pro-lifers be doing that most are NOT doing right now?

Highlight: Lila's reaction when she hears me use the term "pro-abortion-choice."
